“Dog Powered” Sports

What is Canicross?

Canicross is a very popular sport in Europe and is quickly making its way to the USA. It is a “dog powered” sport, meaning the dog is attached to and is pulling the human, in this case both participants are running. The human is the driver, directing the dog from behind with voice commands similar to those used in regular mushing. Canicross s a great way for both dog and human to get fit and to allow the dog to use his innate desire to run and pull, which strengthens his mind, body and makes for a happy dog!

What is Bikejoring and Skijoring?

Bikejoring and Skijoring are other “dog powered” sports. Rather than running, the dog is either pulling the human while on a bike or on skis. Often times dogs are in better shape and can out pace their owners on foot, so bikejoring and skijoring are great alternatives to running, allowing the dog to reach his peak exercise potential without the owner feeling tired out.

What is Dog Sledding?

Dog sledding

Probably the most famous dog-powered sport is dog sledding. In this popular sport, dogs are used to pull a sled over snow and ice. This ancient mode of transportation has deep roots in the arctic regions of North America, Europe and Asia.

In many parts of the world, mushers train year-round for sled dog races. These races are often distinguished either by distance (sprint, mid-distance and long-distance racing) or by the number of dogs in a team.  One of the most well-known sled dog race in the world is the Iditarod, held each year in Nome, Alaska to commemorate the 1925 serum run to Nome.
